Most of these people travel the Ring of Kerry route either by car or bus. Alternative variations of the loop include the Gap of Dunloe and Black Valley, as well as the Skellig Ring and Valentia Island. (Photo: Boris Breytman via Canva)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>What is the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle?&nbsp;<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the early 1980s, an <strong>annual charity cycle<\/strong> has taken place around the Ring of Kerry.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This charity cycle started out as a small event, which has grown considerably over the years in both terms of participant numbers and the funds raised for both local, as well as national charities. The number of cyclists taking part in the <strong>Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle 2022<\/strong> is capped at <strong>8000<\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle follows an anticlockwise direction around the Ring of Kerry with clear designated starting points spread out around the route to avoid congestion.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Registration for this event opens in February and the cycle takes place on the first Saturday of July. Many people wonder which direction to cycle the loop in.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For <strong>safety reasons<\/strong> it is recommended that the Ring of Kerry is cycled in a <strong>clockwise direction<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overtaking maneuvers especially by large vehicles, such as trucks and tourist buses, are one of the main drawbacks faced by cyclists on Irish roads. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally speaking, larger vehicles, particularly tour buses tend to drive in a counterclockwise direction around the Ring of Kerry. By cycling in a clockwise direction, the likelihood of encountering such overtaking maneuvers is considerably reduced.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another plus is that cyclists will be <strong>closer to the coastal views<\/strong> when they cycle in the left lane (don&rsquo;t forget that in Ireland vehicles drive on the left side of the road!). <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an anticlockwise direction, there is always a lane of traffic between the cyclists and the views.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The traditional tourist Ring of Kerry cycle route follows a <strong>counterclockwise direction<\/strong>. It starts in Killarney and travels toward Killorglin and follows the route around the Peninsula. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last stage of the cycle is then through Killarney National Park before finishing up again in Killarney.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The route outlined below follows the clockwise route around the Ring of Kerry.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>When is the best time to cycle the Ring of Kerry?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is best to attempt this cycle during the months with better weather and long hours of daylight.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the peak tourist season of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.letsgoireland.com\/weather-in-ireland-in-june\/\"><strong>June<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.letsgoireland.com\/weather-in-ireland-in-july\/\"><strong>July<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.letsgoireland.com\/weather-in-ireland-in-august\/\"><strong>August<\/strong><\/a> (particularly the latter two months) traffic can be heavy, so it might be worth considering <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.letsgoireland.com\/weather-in-ireland-in-may\/\">May<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.letsgoireland.com\/weather-in-ireland-in-september\/\">September<\/a><\/strong>, (or even <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.letsgoireland.com\/weather-in-ireland-in-april\/\">April<\/a><\/strong>) as good alternatives.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Ring of Kerry Cycling Route<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The route outlined below divides the route into four stages, traveling in a clockwise direction from Killarney. This is a popular stopping point that offers an unrivaled panorama of the National Park, including <strong>Eagles Nest<\/strong> and <strong>Torc Mountain<\/strong>, which frame the lakes. Even the route to the beach is very picturesque; it is reached by a narrow road through woodland. This fine, sandy beach with its incredibly blue water epitomizes the unique beauty of the Ring of Kerry.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Take note<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that it is only safe to swim in the designated areas of the beach. (Photo: magian via Canva<\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From Derrynane, there is another climb to the next impressive viewing point of Coomakista (also known as <\/span><b><i>Com an Chiste <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ring), which has a decent car park. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a clear day, the breathtaking panoramic vista includes <\/span><b>Abbey Island<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Deenish Island <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the larger <\/span><b>Scariff Island<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as views of <\/span><b>Dursey Island<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>Beara Peninsula<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (See below for our tips about the night!)&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The route takes a long descent into <\/span><b>Waterville<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a lovely, small town with a very famous connection. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was a favorite holiday destination of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.letsgoireland.com\/the-ultimate-charlie-chaplin-guide-to-waterville-in-kerry-ireland\/\"><b>Charlie Chaplin<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and there is usually a Charlie Chaplin Comedy Festival in his honor each summer.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(There are plenty of accommodation options here if you want to do this stage over two days.)<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Extra Tip<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: On a clear night, the remote viewing spot at Coomakista is a superb star gazing spot. In fact, the entire area from Waterville to Kells (measuring about 700 km2 or 270 square miles) is part of the <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kerrydarkskytourism.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Kerry International Dark-Sky Reserve<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to the fact that the area does not receive much light and dust pollution, when the skies are clear there are fantastic opportunities to view the night sky. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kerry reserve was the first reserve in the Northern Hemisphere and is only one of four <strong>Gold Tier Dark Sky Reserves<\/strong> in the world. the <\/span><b>Ballaghisheen Pass<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an exceptionally scenic option. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of taking the Ring of Kerry coastal route via Cahersiveen back to Killarney, it is possible to take this pass, which cuts through the middle of the Iveragh Peninsula.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From there, it is possible to head back towards <\/span><b>Caragh Lake<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> via <\/span><b>Blackstone Bridge<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for some excludes some great highlights.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is well worth taking the Ring of Skellig route, which is an extra 18 km (or 11 miles) and then explore Portmagee and the unique attractions on Valentia Island.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Skellig Ring route veers off the N70 after passing through Waterville and encompasses the Irish speaking area (or Gaeltacht) village of Ballinskelligs and its lovely beach along with Ballinskelligs Priory and ruined tower, known in the area as Ballinskelligs Castle.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then the Skellig Ring route passes the <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/skelligschocolate.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Skelligs Chocolate Factory<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you fancy sampling some traditional, as well as unusual chocolate favors, it is definitely the stop for you!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" (Photo: moniquee2 via Canva<\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From here the route follows mostly along the coast, taking in the <\/span><b>Coomanaspic Pass <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(or in Irish, <\/span><b><i>C&uacute;m an Easpaig<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).The <\/span><b>Kerry Cliffs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are another highlight located a little further on (roughly about 6 km after the Skellig Chocolate Factory). <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These privately owned, spectacular cliffs are not as high as the <\/span><b>Cliffs of Moher<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and definitely not as touristy, but they are very impressive in their own right.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fishing town of <\/span><b>Portmagee<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the next stop on the map. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>The Moorings Guesthouse <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Portmagee was a favorite haunt of <\/span><b>Mark Hamill<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>cast of Star Wars<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when they filmed on the Skellig Michael. <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.letsgoireland.com\/star-wars-ireland\/\">Find out more about the Star Wars connection here<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Portmagee is one <\/span><b>departure point for the Skelligs Islands<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be sure to book in advance if you want to actually land on Skellig Michael.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are short on time then a visit to the <\/span><b>Skellig Experience Visitors Centre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a good way to discover more about Skellig Michael. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This small, rocky island continually battered by the waves of the Atlantic Ocean has a fascinating history as an early Christian settlement with stone dwellings that resemble beehive huts. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is also a lighthouse on the island and it is famed for its wildlife.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Skellig Islands are home to many seabirds, including <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.letsgoireland.com\/puffins-ireland\/\">puffins<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>shearwaters<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>razor bills<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>storm petrels<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The first successful <\/span><b>Transatlantic Cable <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was connected from Valentia Island to Heart&rsquo;s Content in Newfoundland, Canada.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also home to the <\/span><b>Tetrapod trackway<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is a record preserved in stone of some of the oldest tetrapod footprints in the world, dating back<\/span><b> ca. 385 million years ago<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After enjoying the superb views from Valentia Island, head towards the ferry from <\/span><b>Knightstown<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where you can take a short 10 minute trip to <\/span><b>Reenard Point<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The descent is steep here, so be careful.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a wonderful vista to enjoy while you recharge for the final leg of the trip back to Killarney. There are plenty of accommodation options in the Rossbeigh and Glenbeigh area if you want to make it a longer stop.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The route from <\/span><b>Glenbeigh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><b>Killorglin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be quite busy in high season, so it might be worth diverting from the main N70 route and taking a slight detour via <\/span><b>Lough Caragh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In addition to the wonderful views of the lake and mountains in the background, this route is much quieter than the main road to <\/span><b>Killorglin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Killorglin is famed for its annual<\/span><b> Puck Fair<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which claims to be Ireland&rsquo;s oldest festival. A wild goat being named king for the duration of the festival takes place between August 10 and 12 each year. (The tradition is that the king goat is placed in a cage on the top of a stand while the festival is being held. However, there is mounting opposition to this old tradition now on the basis of animal welfare.)&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once in Killorglin and over the bridge, it is possible to take another backroad in the direction of <\/span><b>Lismacfinnan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is recommended that the route is cycled in a clockwise manner for safety because larger vehicles such as tour buses are recommended to travel the Ring of Kerry in an anticlockwise direction.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep road safety in mind at all times and be sure to take the necessary precaution by having all the <strong>right gear<\/strong>, including a helmet with you.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Handy Tip:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is a good idea to start early each morning. At this time of the day, there is usually less traffic on the roads.
