Good Night Blessings: Calming words from the Emerald Isle

It is time to wind down and rest at the end of the day.

The high points and low points of the last few hours can fade into the background. Now it is time to mellow down  for a restful sleep.

Meditation can help us unwind before we let our bodies relax and rejuvenate for the coming day.

A carefully chosen blessing can help us to focus as part of this mediation. Irish blessings are perfect for this.

Many blessings from Ireland are well known and loved. They tend to be simple, apt and even occasionally witty.

Wishing your family and friends a good night of sleep is a beautiful bedtime ritual.

Perhaps you are lucky enough to be able to wish these loved ones a peaceful night of sleep in person.

Spoken words can have a powerfully reassuring and comforting effect, which is a good way to feel before falling asleep.

For those loved ones who live further away, sending them a good night message is an option. This is a lovely way to let them know that they are in your thoughts.

Here are some heartfelt blessings for night time to enhance the bedtime routines of those who you care for:

May the light of the stars shine over all you will do
May they show you the way, especially by night.

May the rain refresh your spirit
So that it becomes pure like a lake,

In which the blue of the sky is reflected
And sometimes a star.

May the dreams you hold dearest be those which come true,
The kindness you spread keep returning to you.

But that a star shines for you,
Which promises you hope for the beginning day.

May wonderful memories warm you
And good dreams accompany your sleep.

Did you Know?

Dreams feature a lot in Irish myths and legends.

One of the most famous is about the Irish God Aengus falling in love with a woman in his dreams

He searches all of Ireland  for this woman, known as Caer Ibormeith and eventually finds her. But there is a catch.

She is transformed into a swan every second Samhain

In order to marry her, Aengus must correctly identify her when she is in the form of a swan from a group of 150 other women transformed into swans.

Thankfully, this myth has a happy ending. Aengus succeeds in his task and transforms himself into a swan so that the pair can fly away together.

Another famous Irish legend that funnily enough also features swans, is the legend of the Children of Lir
